Circa 1835-1838. Relief ground clip point blade with sharpened false edge, marked "J. ENGLISH /& HUBERS (reverse) PHILADELPHIA, 2". Waisted ivory handle with nickel silver ferrule and pommel, escutcheons and raised studs on both sides, turned iron ball-end guard. Leather sheath with incised decorations, nickel silver mounts, frog stud decorated with boar’s head. CONDITION: Blade with much original polish, with some light spotting and sharpening, ferrule a bit loose, minor age checking to handle. Some pitting on right side, towards tip. This is one of the finest English &Hubers Bowie knives known. This classic design, its handle perhaps inspired by the early coffin-handle bowies, serves as the logo for the Antique Bowie Knife Association. This example is fresh to the market and was only recently discovered. DMG
