Dating c.1860-1890, this classic bowie is stamped on the face of its blade "V (crown) R, GEORGE BUTLER & COMPANY, TRINITY WORKS, SHEFFIELD", along with the company’s trademark ART. The 7-7/8" saber ground spear point blade has fluted filework on its spine, and the thick nickel silver guard is ornately shaped. The handles are of fine quality stag and the front scale is inlaid with a crest style escutcheon. Overall length 11-3/4”. The original sheath is of heavy leather stitched up one side and retains its original belt loop. CONDITION: This knife is in excellent condition with what appears to be its original blade finish and little or no sharpening with only scattered light scratches and corrosion. The handles have no cracks and the sheath is in excellent condition with only light scuffing. PROVENANCE: The Ron Tunison Collection (Skinner sale #3305M, November 4, 2019; lot 92).
