Bead front sight with express rear sight with silver line for 150 yards, standing, and 250 yards folding leaf. Matte rib signed over breech, "John Rigby & Co 72 St. James Street London and Dublin". Barrels with caliber information for ".450/400 Short Case, 80 grs Powder No.6 / Cannalured Bullet 260 Grs". Barrel flats with appropriate British diagnostic proofs, Rigby trademark, and serial number. Wide sling eye on soldered base on underside of rib. Diminutive forearm with Rigby patent rotary lever and checkered in point pattern. Exterior of iron and lever engraved with florals, opener also engraved with "RIGBY'S PATENT". Matching serial numbers on interior of iron and interior of lever. Action flats with Rigby trademark, London view proofs, and serial number. Back action peninsula locks with stalking safeties. Round body, locks, and recoil shields engraved with flowing scroll, tang a much tighter variation. Fish form hammers engraved with scroll. Double triggers, fore trigger checkered. Pistol grip stock with horn grip cap checkered in point pattern at wrist. Rear sling swivel hole filled with later screw that has molested the wood somewhat. Checkered buttplate with some scroll engraving at heel. Housed in an old leather case with Rigby trade label in lid with appropriate addresses and some old pencilling reading "Rofthi (?) Kentish / Sherramore / RIFLE / 400". Kentish presumably a name, Sherramore likely a reference to the Scottish Sherramore hunting lodge. Partitioned to fit gun and accessories comprising a striker wrench, spare set of strikers, starting rod, sling, and wooden jar. Also included is 19 rounds of Kynoch .450/400 with 230 grain lead copper tubed bullets. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain much of a professional reblack with some marks from handling and operation, alongside a spot or two of old oxidation under the black. Forearm with no chips or cracks and some case colors that have largely faded in protected areas. Some nitre blue visible on push on safeties and some case color is still visible on underside of opening lever, rest of action is silver with a few spots of age-related staining. Stocks have been taken down somewhat and checkering appears recut. Action works appropriately when operated by hand, bores are good with well defined rifling and frosting throughout. 1 case strap is broken, lining has some rubs through the lining. Accessories are good with expected marks from use, replacement striker is a modern iteration. EW
