This 1¢ machine is designed to enlarge and strengthen the lungs. Manufactured by the National Spirometer Company, circa 1900. Test results are revealed on original dial and include "20oz Poor", "35oz Normal", "45oz Average" and "60oz Excellent". Customer would put 1¢ in the coin slot, take a long breath and then blow into the mouthpiece steadily - "do not give a short puff" - and then the pointer will indicate the strength of the lungs in ounces. One of the most original examples known, with no evidence of restoration or repair. Mounted atop an incredible ornate original finish cast-iron stand. This machine has not been tested. Serial No. 1241. With keys.
