Flintlock Kentucky style rifle signed in script "S * Miller" for Simon Miller of Hamburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania circa 1830. Heavy target style octagon rifled barrel measuring 1-1/4" across muzzle with flat barrel keyes and having several dovetails in front and back so as to move the German silver front blade sight and the adjustable rear sight to various positions for different ranges and eye capabilities. Barrel signed in script "S*Miller" and marked "W Deeds" on left barrel flat (most likely the barrel maker). Flintlock marked "ROSS" controlled by a single trigger. Curly maple full stock with "Roman nose" buttstock and brass furniture including a four-piece engraved patchbox with 11 piercings. Brass saddle plate and cheekpiece inlay. Coin Silver thumbpiece inlay and "Man in The Moon" inlay above cheekpiece. Gun has rings below cheekpiece for touch hole pick. 1-1/2" wide butt with patchbox lid control center right on buttplate. Typical Miller style "ram's horn" brass sideplate. Lovely back to back "C" scroll incised carving with tulip and floral design on buttstock. A great fresh to the market Miller rifle. CONDITION: Overall good with some added dovetails and holes in tang for sight placement. Lock is a period lock with some replaced parts. Gun has been reconverted to flint with barrel having correct length but shows signs of welding and heat damage. Front lock bolt is missing. Wood is good with no visible restoration except some wood loss around lock from when the gun was percussion. Gun has shootable bore with sharp lands and grooves. A great looking rifle with condition.
