Springfield Model 1861 contract percussion rifle-musket made by "William Mason" Taunton, Massachusetts in 1863. In the white round rifled barrel with blade front sight with 3 notch flip sight graduated to 500 yards. Barrel marked on left breech with "V", "P", and "1863" near tang. Percussion lock marked with eagle motif with lock dated 1863 and stamped "Wm Mason" over "Taunton". Walnut full musket stock with 3 iron barrel bands(marked with "P" and "U") and iron nosecap with 2-piece iron trigger guard. Stock is marked with a "Z" in front of trigger guard which is marking used to identify guns picked up on the battlefield and rebuilt and issued to Confederate troops. Comes with original steel ramrod. CONDITION: Metal fading to a silvery gray patina with some areas turning to plum brown. Wood has cleaned appearance with slight usage marks and dings. Shootable bore with some light frosting. Great mechanics. DLM
