Originally manufactured by Hotchkiss, Paris and so marked on top of breech with “No 50” and “1850” date. This 2 pounder cannon has been converted to centerfire and is on an original 1894 Hotchkiss manufactured steel carriage with polished brass furnishings. No elevation mechanism present. One 10” and one 4-1/4” unattached adjustment wheels are included. Original Hotchkiss data plate on trail. Tube measures just over 46” long muzzle to breech. Muzzle to end of trail is 82”. Beautiful wood spoke wheels with brass hubs and steel tires were manufactured by Archibald Wheel Company and are 38” high. Width hub to hub 42”. Brass rear sight and steel front sight present and in fine operating condition. Combination spanner/hammer is included. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine black enamel paint refinish over some light pitting on tube with black paint on carriage. Scratches have accrued revealing bare metal in places. Light grey painted wooden spoke wheels are extremely fine with fine albeit pitted black painted steel tires. with bronze and brass parts left bare. Mechanics are fine. Bore has very good rifling with some pitting. Breech block is appropriately in the white and extremely fine starting to have some brown patina. The cataloger was able to move this cannon around with ease. An attractive 19th-century cannon. A fine collectible specimen which would be a lot of fun at the range. JWK 2020-11-61
