Four Damascus screw barrels, the breech ends, and adjoining frame are numbered 1 through 4, respectively. Liege and crown over "D" proofs. Breech engraved with panels of florals. Frame engraved with rocaille; the sides with panels of birds, the top with a detailed devil's mask. Features a steel ring trigger and the grip strap is marked "Mariette/Brevette". Fluted ebony grip scales with central intaglio-carved scrollwork panel. Complete with original rose velour-lined rosewood case. The brass-banded lid with ebony rim and central wooden cartouche carved with scrolls. Fitted interior contains powder flask (Riling #124), barrel-shaped cap box, and single cavity mold with the handle terminating in a nipple wrench and barrel lug. CONDITION: Fine. Bright steel has been lightly cleaned and shows minor wear to some markings. Nipples and striker retain much of original fire-blued finish. Excellent grips. Case lid shows several small and two long grain cracks. Lining shows some fading and minor wear. Accessories are fine to excellent. This is perhaps the nicest Mariette pepperbox the cataloger has encountered. PROVENANCE: Keith Neal Collection, Joseph A. Murphy Collection. DMG
