Springfield manufactured Model 1871 rolling block rifle made under Remington's patent for the U.S. Army in 1872. According to "Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World" by George Layman on page 50, this rifle is one of only about 10,000 made. 36" round barrel chambered in .50-70 Government with military ladder rear sight and blade front. Color case hardened action with "(Springfield Armory Eagle) / Springfield / 1872" on right side and "Model 1871" on left. Remington patent dates on upper receiver tang. Other metal components are polished bright. 2 piece walnut stock and forearm in 2 barrel band musket configuration with military style buttplate marked "U.S." on upper tang. Stock has Erskine S. Allen cartouche on left side of stock in wrist. Bottom wrist of stock near lower receiver tang is sub inspected with a "D" marking. CONDITION: Excellent, with barrel and metal components beautifully polished bright with no sign of cleaning and minor patina beginning to form overall. Action assembly is beginning to fade but maintains case colors in protected areas with minor wear and patina from storage. Buttplate is starting to form a brown patina. Stock and forearm are excellent and strong with cartouches sharp and no major cracks or dents. Scattered gouging from handling throughout stock and forearm. Action works correctly and locks tightly including safety notch. Bore is bright with some abrasion. Overall an attractive example that would fit in nicely into any martial rolling block collection. -TN-
