Rare Confederate made "C.S. Richmond" rifle-musket dated 1862. These rifles were built on tooling obtained from Harper's Ferry when captured by the Confederates in 1861 and were made using captured stocks and parts used in making the Springfield Model 1855 U.S. Rifle. The Richmond Armory served as the principal Arsenal of the Confederacy until destroyed in 1865. Gun features a 40" "in-the-white" finished rifled barrel with blade front sight also used to affix a socket type bayonet. Rear blued two leaf flip notch sight. Barrel has "VP" and "Eagle Head" proofs on left rear near breech with no visible date. Forged humpback lock similar to the Model 1855 with no Maynard Tape primer system, hump is less pronounced and lock is the type II production. Lock is percussion and is dated "1862" and is marked "C.S." over "Richmond, VA." Walnut full military stock with correct brass buttplate and nose cap. With lock out there is no channel in "Mule's Foot" for Maynard Tape primer system. Sight looks to be correct with exposed screw. Correct 3 iron barrel bands with "U" marking. Comes with vintage leather sling and original looking steel ramrod. CONDITION: Overall aged patina possibly cleaned long ago with some usage marks and dings and light spots of pitting on barrel surface. Appears to have splice in wood near Mule's Foot. Brass parts have aged golden patina. Wood has traces of original finish with usage marks and dings. Dark bore with some visible rifling. Good mechanics. DLM
