H.S. Groff worked in and around Lancaster County, Pennsylvania circa 1830 to 1850. Full octagon, rifled barrel signed in script "H.S. Groff No. 70". Blade front sight and rear notched sight. Percussion lock marked "Golcher" controlled by double set triggers. Full curly maple stock with brass furniture with 4-piece patchbox with toe release button for lid. Silver "Man in the Moon" cheekpiece inlay with silver thumbpiece. Lancaster-style sideplate with Lancaster-style wrist carving which resembles checkering. Silver barrel escutcheons with flat barrel keyes. Wood has remnants of artificial striping finish. CONDITION: Metal parts turning an aged plum patina with some light pitting around touch hole. Brass has aged golden color. No visible restoration with toeplate being bent possibly covering some old wood loss. Finish has traces of original striping with added coat of oil. Shootable bore and good mechanics. Nice old good looking rifle. DLM
