Confederate marked "Fayetteville" rifle made in 1862. Made from captured parts from Harper's Ferry, these rifles were made at Fayetteville Arsenal in North Carolina and resemble the Model 1855 U.S. service rifle. Rifle has rifled browned barrel that is 33" long with blade front sight and lug for saber bayonet with "VP" and "Eagle" proofs at the breech suggesting this a Type I rifle with use of captured parts. Rear sight is the U.S. Model 1858 sight with 100 yard, 300 yard and 500 yard leaves. Lock is the Type I early style "High hump" lock made from Model 1855 castings. Lock is dated "1862" behind hammer and has "Eagle" with head turned towards hammer over a barely visible "C.S.A." with forward stamped "Fayetteville". Walnut captured stock with no patchbox and cut out in mortise for Maynard tape priming system in "Mule's Foot". Brass hardware with "C.S.A." marked buttplate tang and two brass barrel bands with "U" markings. Iron nose cap (?) with tulip shaped steel ramrod. A well taken care of important Civil War rifle. CONDITION: As found with usage marks and dings but taken care of with barrel browning possibly enhanced. Small area of cracking near muzzle in forestock. Dark pitted bore with good mechanics. A nice rifle. DLM
