Norwich Arms Model 1861 rifle musket made in 1862 by Norwich Arms Company with percussion lock marked "LFS Foster" and engraved with scroll and "Federal shields". LFS Foster or LaFayette Sabina Foster was a prominent American politician from Norwich, Connecticut and served as Mayor of Norwich, Connecticut among other political offices eventually becoming "President pro tempore of the United States Senate" of the "39th" Congress in 1865, which if John Wilkes Booth and accomplices would have succeeded, he would have been acting U.S. President. Gun has typical "In The White" finished round rifled barrel with blade front sight and three leaf rear notched sight. Barrel has "VP" and "Eagle" proof with 1862 date. Walnut full military stock with iron furniture including "U.S." marked buttplate and three "U" marked barrel bands. Comes with period looking leather sling, brass tag marked "55 CSM" and original steel ramrod. CONDITION: Overall good with metal parts worn to a silvery patina and wood having an aged dark appearance. No visible restoration or repairs. Dark bore with great mechanics. Great historical rifle.
