Winchester Model 1897 slide action trench shotgun. Made 1942 as a government contact riot gun. Serials on the barrel and frame match (E prefix) and fall within the range of contracted riot guns, (914,000-928,000 Canfield's Complete Guide to US Military Shotgun). Original riot bead sight was removed when the heat shield was added. Markings on the barrel include standard Winchester Trademark and patent dates, in addition to "42" stamped under the barrel. Top of the barrel retains its proper flaming bomb stamp and Winchester proof. Frame is stamped "U.S." next to a flaming bomb on the left side of the frame. Stock is with proper boxed "W.B" inspector stamp over crossed cannons. Heat shield is stamped "W" on the left side of the bayonet mount with six rows of vent holes (common on World War I trench guns). Metal was lightly refinished at some point. Original light oil finish on the wood. Factory plastic butt plate with no sling swivels, which is correct. "CYL" marked bore, 2 - 3/4" chamber. CONDITION: Metal retains 85% of its finish with general wear and handling marks. Wood is very good with minor scratches and dents. Butt plate has a chip out of the right edge. Bore is shiny. Mechanically fine. JWA
