Kentucky flintlock rifle attributed to John Mewhirter of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania circa 1815 to 1836. Full octagon smoothbore barrel with blade front sight and notched rear sight. Single bolt flint lock with no markings controlled by a single trigger. Full curly maple stock with raised carving in "C" scroll pattern similar to various rifles signed by Frederick Sell. Nice raised Q" carving around tang. Brass furniture including a four piece engraved "Q" style finial also similar to finials seen on Mewhirters. Square button release for patchbox lid in toeplate. Nice engraved brass trigger bow. Nicely engraved sideplate. CONDITION: Gun has heavy restoration with barrel having been lengthened approximately 10" along with forestock wood. Lock is a replacement with some added wood around mortise. Dark pitted bore with sticky mechanics. A good looking carved rifle. DLM
