This style of Scagel is extremely hard to find as there were not many made. These knives were sold by Abercrombie & Fitch. Scagel would often send the knife only and Abercrombie & Fitch would then send it to Heiser to custom make the sheath to fit each knife. Around 1930, when the Great Depression hit, Abercrombie & Fitch wanted Scagel to drop his prices. Scagel refused and ceased business with the company. The recurved blade is deeply and well marked with the very desirable double stamping of Scagel's kris as well as "W. SCAGEL / HANDMADE" stamp, both on the left side of the recurved blade, which is double notched at the top. The canted brass guard is followed by an attractive blend of alternating spacers of silver, red fiber, German silver, brass, leather, and copper. This knife has a particularly distinct pattern, which creates an attractive and impressive effect. The crown stag pommel is retained by two brass pins. Handle measures about 5-1/4" overall. Complete with its original custom-made Heiser "Pancake" hand-tooled sheath. It is important to note the sheath is canted to fit the brass guard, which helps to date this knife. The brown leather scabbard has a large gilt-brass "HEISER / DENVER" button on the retaining strap. CONDITION: Excellent to near mint overall. Blade shows a couple minor scratches. Markings are deep and crisp. Handle is excellent, showing one minor dent near the top of the spacers on the left side. Sheath is excellent, showing little or no use. An extremely rare and desirable example. PROVENANCE: From the personal collection of Dr. James R. Lucie. DMG
