Long octagonal barrel with slightly swamped barrel and copper front sight, rear sight dovetail filled but rear sight is missing. "P" and "F" over the breech on opposite flats. Full length fruitwood stock inlaid with ivory inlays with geometric and floral designs. Ramrod, possibly the original, is missing its tip and is retained by a single ferrule. Butt portion of stock more elaborately inlaid than balance of rifle including mother of peal with classically formed trigger guard. Right side of stock with patchbox. Wheelock mechanism engraved with further geometrics and a satyr, and other mythical beings. Pan cover engraved en suite. Three brass pieces are have been overlaid on sections of the lock mechanism and engraved en suite. CONDITION: Very good for a rifle of this type, with an old, protective layer of varnish put over the gun. Barrel is very good with mixing of some patina with wear at high edges. Lock was cleaned at one point in the European fashion over some old now inactive oxidation. Wood stock is very good, piece missing at nose cap on right side. On right side, approximately 1/3, down the length of the stock, there is a crack that goes through one of the inlays and runs to the barrel retaining pin. A few other minor cracks and bumps throughout the gun. One chip missing near trigger guard. Buttplate is missing a chip at bottom. A few minor inlays replaced. Action needs some minor attention as sliding pan cover will not hold open. No crank is included with this lot so functionality can not be verified. Bore is very good with a minimum of oxidation but rifling is shallow but visible. One screw on wheel cover is loose and needs attention. This is a good example of a relatively rare birding rifle. EW
