Composite Plains percussion rifle with Riddle lock converted to percussion. 30 - 1/2" full octagon with a heavy contour in .54 caliber spuriously marked (cocked) "S. Hawken" "St. Louis" with fixed rear sight and low "Rocky Mountain" German silver front sight. 1 piece, walnut "half stock" with cheekpiece with German silver oval and diamond escutcheons on forearm, brass trigger guard of the typical "Plains Rifle" style, brass forearm cap, brass patchbox, and brass rifle buttplate. Ramrod mountings are iron on barrel under rib. Bottom of stock just forward of trigger guard is marked "KOL" / "48." CONDITION: Good, with barrel and lock turning a mottled dove gray patina with scattered light to moderate pitting throughout. Rear sight has been peened to re-tighten the dovetail with front having a spacer added with an additional dovetail where a front sight would be that is plugged. Brass furniture is turning a pleasing mustard patina with German silver escutcheons turning a dull silver. Stock is excellent and strong with only minor wear. Action works correctly. Bore is very good with sharp rifling and light dust throughout. This rifle would make an excellent wall-hanger or shooter. -TN-
