"US" marked winchester Winder single shot musket. Made approximately 1918 under contract for the U.S. government as a trainer rifle for U.S. troops. "U.S./ (Flaming bomb proof)" on the frame at the start of the tang. Barrel is marked with typical patent dates, with the caliber marked "22 SHORT" in front of the chamber. Correct Lyman adjustable rear peep sight with blade front sight. Round steel barrel with consistent patina. Frame also shows nice patina over its original finish. Stock and hand guard look to have been refinished at some point. Original metal curved butt plate. CONDITION: Metal retains little to none of its original finish with a general patina covering most of the metal parts. Wood is very good with a few minor dings scratches and gouges. Frosted bore with good overall rifling. Mechanically fine. JWA
