Dovetail lump barrels with doll's head rib extension and single steel bead on tapered slightly concave matte rib. Barrels signed "Sir J. Whitworths / Fluid Pressed Steel". Rib signed "William Powell & Sons, 13. Carrs Line, Birmingham". Barrel flats with Birmingham proofs for 12 gauge choked barrels, barrels with serial numbers and Birmingham proofs. Forearm with Anson release with checkering throughout with vacant line near iron and around release escutcheon. Engraved in tight scroll. Boxlock action engraved with scroll and signed "William Powell & Son" and marked with Birmingham proofs on action flats with "ANSON & DEELY'S / PATENT 9683". Fixed safety, extractors. Checkered sidepanels converging to a teardrop. Prince of Wales pistol grip checkered through. Brass shield inset into belly on stock. Horn buttplate. Housed in a leather case with "J.O.H. Denny / Pittsburgh PA" on lid with accessories comprising three piece cleaning rod, mop, brush, and key. William Powell trade label in lid and charge table. CONDITION: Very good as professionally restored. Barrels retain much of an old reblue with heavy softening to legends. Action is largely silver with age related staining, engraving still visible. Action floorplate reblued with heavy softening to legends. Stocks have been sanded and revarnished with several areas of spliced repairs in the checkering that appear stable. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is very good with some light orange peel. Ghost in rib. Case is is good with several areas of scuffing and some tenderness to leather from age. Accessories are very good and commensurate with case. Lid inscription is believed to refer to one of the various J. (James / John / Josiah) O'Hara Harmer Denny family members, a prominent business family in Pittsburgh. EW

CORRECTION: Serial number corrected, current UDF lists the A&D patent number. Correct serial number is 8984. 8984 serial number indicates manufacture in 1890, making this an antique.
