Scarce gold US Navy Distinguished Public Service Medal that was awarded to noteworthy American businessman William Randolph Hearst Sr. Accompanying the medal is a copy of the original citation that was given to Hearst when he received the medal. The citation states "In recognition of your outstanding personal contribution to the Navy's successful prosecution of World War II." According to the citation, Hearst was awarded with this honor during World War II but circumstances prevented this gold medal from being presented to him during the war. This medal was presented to Hearst in July of 1951, which was only one month before he passed away. The front of the medal reads "Navy Department / United States of America" The reverse is engraved to Hearst and reads "WM Randolph Hearst, Sr." in a period government style engraving. The medal is stamped "14K" on the lower right side on the reverse. The medal was weighed and registered 15.5g on the scale. CONDITION: Overall excellent. The medal does not display tarnishing and the engraving is crisp. This is a very nice medal that was awarded to a prominent figure in American history. JD
