Circa 1952. Vibrant blacked 26" chopper lump steel barrels. Front metal bead on narrow tapered stippled rib. Top of left barrel engraved "J. Purdey & Sons" and top of right barrel engraved "Audley House, South Audley Street, London, England". JA stamp on bottom left tube for J. Aldous, barrel maker. The barrel flats have London Proof Marks. Classic Purdey sidelock ejector utilizing the Beesley self-opening action with vintage case color finish and engraved in well cut English rose and scroll pattern; James Purdy & Sons on both lockplates. Sidelock pins are gold washed. Underside of receiver with "J. Purdey & Sons, London, England". Disc set strikers, cocking indicating pins. Double triggers in a flat profile trigger guard. Auto safe with "SAFE" inlaid in gold. Nicely streaked European walnut stock with English style straight hand grip, classic drop points behind action, checkered butt, cast approximately 1/2" off and blank stock oval. Splinter forend with Anson push button style release with point pattern checkering. "R" on forend iron indicating the actioner. Housed in canvas case with leather tablet on lid "T. H. McGRAIL" and accessories comprising of cleaning rod, mop, brush, jag, pair of nickel Abercrombie and Fitch snap caps, square nickel oil bottle. CONDITION: Very Good. Barrels with a high quality old reblack are very good with some normal minor handling marks. Barrels are slightly off face, mostly noticeable when forend is removed. Lockplates likely rehardened, balance of receiver with more subdued case coloring mostly visible in protected areas. Gold washed pins have gold wearing at tips of pins. Forend checkering original, wrist checkering recut. One noticeable mark on left side of stock near comb amongst other normal minor marks. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bores are very good with some very minor freckling towards muzzle. Ejectors work well. Case is good with normal scuffs from use but carry handle has detached, exercise caution when carrying case. A good traditionally configured Purdey shotgun. CP
