Of solid construction throughout, resulting in an extraordinarily heavy firearm. Simple bead and notch signs with fishform cock. Stock lightened in an attempt to make the gun somewhat wieldable. Octagonal to round barrel. Very slightly flowy trigger guard, vacant ramrod pipe. No makers marks visible. CONDITION: Very good. Metal has acquired an even light pitting consistent with use at sea, with two light bands, likely when gun was mounted for display in the past. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is very good commensurate with balance of metal. Screws have been mangled. These were used to propel bomb lances for whale hunting prior to the use of more conventional firearms. EW

CORRECTION: 18th century in title is a typo, this is a 19th-century piece.
