Sharps pocket shotgun possibly built as a prototype circa 1850- 1865. Gun resembles Tipping and Lawden Sharps single shot pistol with the exception that the frame is a derivative of one of the large style four barrel derringers made at the time and comes apart with the removal of a screw in the bottom of the frame. Barrel is blued octagon to round tapering to a length of 19" and is unmarked. Breech of barrel has percussion nipple inside concealed when gun is assembled. Blued iron frame has remnants of a marking that says "Sharps Patent ***, 25 1859" on right side. When disassembled frame is marked on underside of butt with the serial number "5193". Percussion hammer controlled by a thumb trigger. Walnut plain pistol grip stock with steel serrated grip cap and Sharps style cast steel buttplate. Stock has nicely shaped cheekpiece. A truly unique piece worthy of more research. CONDITION: 60% original barrel blue with some light freckling. Action retains 40% blue with balance turning a plum brown. Wood has been cleaned with traces of an old oil finish. Good bore and mechanics. DLM
