An intriguing gun built by unknown gunsmith or factory "Lunchbox Special" circa the early 20th century. Blued octagon barrel with dovetail front sight and dovetail fixed notched rear sight. Barrel is marked with "Marlin Firearms Co. New Haven, Ct. U.S.A." with patent dates of "1887, 1889 and 1893". Barrel is also marked "FOR BLACKPOWDER ONLY" and "32-40". Barrel has hinged mechanism and homemade extractor and is believed to be a barrel off of a Marlin Model 1893 lever action rifle. Barrel has a solid round rod attached with a dovetail and homemade band covering part of Marlin Address, which serves no purpose except possibly balance. Case hardened action with homemade blued hinge lock release lever. Blued sheet metal trigger guard formed into a finger loop. Blued unmarked Vernier tang sight. External 2 position hammer and single trigger. Walnut plain stock with steel crescent butt with hole drilled in center of the buttstock under buttplate and filled with lead shot. CONDITION: Barrel blue has faded to 40% turning a plum brown. Action turning a plum brown patina. Wood has 60% original varnish with some handling marks and dings. Good shootable bore with visible rifling and crisp mechanics. DLM
