Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Carbine. Made 1878. Correct 22" round steel barrel. Rear sight is the correct 1879 variant, ranged to 1500 yards. Blade front sight on correct pedestal. Correct "E P (Eagle head) P" proofs on the left side of the barrel. Lockplates has been worn to a patina, leaving no visible markings. Saddle ring bar and loop present. Correct carbine butt plate with sliding door for a cleaning kit. No cleaning kit is present. Metal has formed an overall nice patina throughout. Wood has a light oil finish. No visible cartouche on the left side of the stock. CONDITION: Metal retains little of its original finish, forming a gray patina in most areas. Wood has numerous handling marks, dents and scratches. No visible cracks. Bore has frosting, with some pitting near the muzzle. Fair rifling retained. Hammer is tight. Mechanically fine. JWA
