Maynard single shot Improved Hunting or Target No. 9 rifle Model 1873 for use with the "THICK" head shells built by Massachusetts Arms Company, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts circa 1873 to 1890. Comes with 2 octagon to round rifled barrels with blued finish and case hardened attached levers and the number 5548 on each barrel matching the frame. Both barrels are 26" long and 1 comes with hunting style sights with a plain blade front and notched rear. The other barrel comes with a brass globe front sight and fixed notch rear with dovetail for scope or other added sight. Gun has a case hardened frame with "Edward Maynard Patentee May 27 1851, Dec. 6, 1859" and "1873" on left side of frame and "Manufactured By Mass. Arms. Co. Chicopee Falls" on the right with a folding Vernier tang peep sight. Plain walnut stock with iron furniture. Comes in fitted hardwood case with 24 shell casings. CONDITION: Barrels retain 80% of a fading original blue finish with some light handling wear and freckling. Action has 10% fading case colors fading to a silvery patina. 80% original varnish with handling marks and dings. Good bores and mechanics. Case has storage and handling marks with no major damage.
