U.S. Model 1842 Musket. 42" round rifled barrel with 3 barrel bands. .69 caliber percussion. Lockplate marked in 3 lines: "HARPERS/FERRY /1851" along with "(American Eagle) / U.S". Tulip head steel ramrod. Bayonet lug at muzzle. Full length plain, straight grain walnut stock. Sling provisions mounted to trigger bow, and middle barrel band. Rear barrel sight is a period replacement. Stock is marked 2 places "OHIO" at the stock wrist behind the barrel tang, and left flat opposite the lockplate. A name is lightly scratched on the left side of the stock. Name is believed to be "JACOB CLAYTON" Rifle is accompanied with a letter from the State of Ohio, Adjutant General's Department, dated December 1, 1961 identifying from the Ohio Civil War personnel records "Jacob S. Clayton". Jacob Clayton is listed as a private in Company A, 43rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Lot also includes a Civil War period tintype with the image of a young infantryman holding a similar musket. CONDITION: Good, with a brown patina overall. Moderate to heavy pitting on the barrel around the ignition nipple. Wood shows moderate to heavy use with a crack on the stock flat opposite the lock plate. Forearm has multiple dents and gouges. Overall a very interesting Civil War era musket that deserves further research. -MKS-
