For a nearly identical example, see number 24 on page 31 of "The Kentucky Pistol" by Chandler & Whisker. This pistol has an octagonal smoothbore barrel with a small iron front sight and a notched rear sight mounted on the front of the tang. Pistol has a hooked breech and a gold lined touch hole. The lock is stamped "CALDERWOOD" in the center and features a waterproof pan and roller frizzen. The iron trigger guard has engraved arms motifs on the bow and terminates in the front with an engraved pineapple finial. Ramrod ferrules are also iron. The bottom of the grip has a teardrop shaped silver inlay inscribed with indistinct monogrammed initials. There are octagonal silver inlays on both sides of the barrel key and a silver forend cap. The walnut half-stock features a shaped checkered panel around the grip. Wooden ramrod is a replacement. CONDITION: Barrel retains a browned surface with some light freckling. Lock appears to be in its original flintlock configuration and functions well, retains a brown patina. Stock shows scattered oil staining, wear and marks from use. An attractive American pistol. EW
