1905 vintage Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle, serial number 256263. 24" octagon barrel, chambered in .22 WRF. Tang mounted Lyman sight. Breech of barrel is marked with double Winchester proof marks, indicating a factory repair or replacement barrel. Barrel is indeed a later replacement by evident of the May 30, 1911 patent date and marked: "-MOD. 90-". This marking, with a wide space between "Mod." and "90", is present on barrels made after March 12, 1919. Magazine tube shows evidence of repair (brazing) just past the loading port. Receiver is engraved in a factory pattern #10 featuring a squirrel on the left side with light scroll work, and light scroll work on right side. Accompanying the rifle is a hand written letter from former Winchester factory engraver, Pauline Muerrie, dated January 29, 2012, rendering an opinion the engraving to be the work of John Ulrich. CONDITION: Very good with an overall grey/brown patina. Engraving shows moderate wear. Barrel shows scattered areas of light to heavy pitting especially at the muzzle. Wood is excellent showing modest wear. Bore is turning dark. Action functions properly. -MKS-
