Hard to find Greene single shot breechloading percussion rifle with bayonet. Made circa 1860 by the A.H. Waters Armory and is noted as the first bolt action rifle adopted by the United States. No markings on the metal, minus "GREENE'S PATENT/NOV. 17,1857" in the top of the tang. No inspector markings on the wood indicating possible commercial sale. Round barrel with blade front sight and rear sight adjustable to 800 yards. Original blued finish worn to a nice patina in most areas. Walnut stock with original metal butt plate. Socket bayonet is marked "J.D.G." CONDITION: Metal contains little of its original finish with most areas forming a nice gray patina. Wood has a few minor dings, scratches and dents. Bore is clean overall with good Lancaster (oval bore) style rifling retained. Bayonet has formed a gray patina as well. Looks to be mechanically fine. A nice example of a hard to find rifle. JWA
