Sharps New Model 1863 breech loading percussion carbine. Made mid-1860s. Barrel marked, "NEW MODEL 1863" behind the rear sight, and "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO/HARTFORD CONN" in front of the rear sight. Standard patent date on the right side of the frame. "I.W.R" marked saddle ring bar. 22" round steel barrel with ladder rear sight. Period refinished, and now forming a gray patina in most areas. Wood stocks with no patchbox in the butt. CONDITION: Metal retains little of its finish forming a gray patina in most areas. There are some areas of cleaned pitting on the right side of the frame and on top of the breechblock. Rear sight has a slightly bent. Wood has a few minor handling marks and scratches. Butt looks to have been lightly sanded. Handguard is cracked from the band to the frame. Bore is frosted with a few minor areas of pitting. Mechanically operable. Overall a decent example of a carbine that most likely saw Civil War use. JWA
