Rare special order Winchester Model 70 bolt action rifle in .303 British made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1938. .303 British is a caliber listed in Roger Rule's book "The Rifleman's Rifle" on page 264 as a caliber with verified factory examples. Gun has blued Winchester Proof Steel standard weight rifle configuration barrel marked with Winchester roll stamp and caliber marking .303 BR. Barrel is marked on underside "303 with "1" in a triangle then "36". Ramped front hooded sight with Winchester 22 G rear adjustable sight, which is correct for low comb stock. Correct dark blue action finish with stripper clip cut out, drilled front bridge, and non-drilled rear bridge. Correct pre-war style solid handle bolt with 3-position wing style safety numbered "15344", which matches the action serial number. Correct walnut, pre-war style, low comb, finely checkered pistol grip stock with steel checkered Widow's peak buttplate and original bow style sling swivels. A correct rare special order gun. PROVENANCE: George Baumer Collection. CONDITION: 90% plus original barrel and action blue with bolt handle starting to turn slightly grey from operation and some slight case wear on end of barrel. Floorplate has carry wear with edges worn silver and some small blemishes. Wood has 90% remaining pre-war style finish with checkering wearing flat from use and a small ding in left side near rear sling swivel. Buttplate starting to turn a silvery patina.
