Circa 1929. Beautiful and vintage, number 3 gun of a composed trio of 12 bore shotguns. The chopper lump 29" nitro proof Whitworth steel barrels are fitted with ejectors, tapered concave game rib, and brass round front bead sight. Rib reads "J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET.LONDON." "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL" Rib also adorned with a number "3" in gold near breech. Bottom rib reads "MADE IN ENGLAND". Lump stamped " "59051" and "59052". Serial number stamped on both barrel bottoms. Barrel flats stamped with appropriate London nitro proof marks, 2 - 1/2 (inch) and 1 -1/8 (ounce). Chambers are 2 - 5/8" and chokes are Improved Cylinder and Modified. The case colored patent "Beesley" sidelock action is engraved with the J. PURDEY & SONS traditional rose and scroll by "HARRY KELL". Side lock sideplates also with cocking indicators and engraved "J. Purdey & Sons". This handsome gun is built with double triggers with front being spring-bladed. Action has disk set strikers, engraved blued top lever (with gold inlaid number 3), and is auto-safe. The triggers are nicely protected by an engraved blued trigger guard which extends to a long engraved bottom strap. The flat top checkered straight hand gripped J. Purdey & Sons styled reddish-brown with drop points English straight hand grip stock with gold oval engraved "HRB" in shaded block, brown leather pad also has a gold number "3" inlaid at its heel. The gun's length of pull to center measures 14 - 1/2" over its 1" brown leather covered pad. The splinter forend with Anson-styled push-button release is stamped "FH" (Fred Hughes) on forend metal. According to a J. Purdey & Sons Weapon history, the guns stocker is Mr. A. Dean and its finisher was Mr. J. Warlow. This vintage beauty is housed in a more recent oak and leather case and with a leather James Purdey & Sons trade label. Inside the case there is a pair of nickel-plated snap caps. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain 87% black and are in sound working condition. The case-colored action retains approximately 85% case color. Ejectors are in time and triggers are crisp. The stock has some handling marks and the brown leather pad has some wear. Splinter forend with light handling marks. Oak and leather case with exterior handling and storage marks. Interior of case with signs of wear where the compartments have been altered to fit the gun. Overall a very nice game gun. CP
