Brigadier General George Glas Sandeman Carey was a British officer during World War I, most notable for his association with "Carey's Force", a group of approximately 3,000, mostly comprising untrained clerks, railway workers, and a few trained soldiers who blocked the Germans during the movement to Amiens during the Second Battle of the Somme and "plugged the gap". Classic configuration of the Remington Model 95 with top strap marked "REMINGTON ARMS -- U.M.C. CO. ILION, NY". Underside of barrels with British view and proof marks. Period retailer applied gold wash on barrels and small parts, with silver-plated frame. Bone grips with left scale marked "Presented to / Brig. Genl. Carey / From the 5th Army / May 1 1918". Housed in a period retailer case with flame-grained burl walnut lid. Cogswell & Harrison trade label in lid, with ammo block with bone lid for four rounds of .41 Rimfire, and extra compartment with bone lid with 2 extra rounds of .41. Bone handled cleaning rod. Accompanied by a letter from the Ministry of Defense relating some of the history of Carey, article preview from the New York Times, a copy of a letter that Carey wrote on April 28th, relating talking about how he did very little for the force other than "give my name to Carey's Force - & it appealed for some reason or other to the public - My doings were very much exagerated.", and a book excerpt also contesting Carey's relevance to "Carey's Force". CONDITION: Excellent, retaining much of the dealer applied silver finish on the frame with some minor tarnishing that could easily be cleaned. Gold wash is lifting but still retains well over half of the wash, most loss on left side of barrels, particularly bottom barrel. Action works appropriately, bores are very good with strong rifling and a few spots of abrasion. Case is very good with some minor dents and dings throughout and one crack on bottom. Trade label is contemporary, bone parts are very good with some handling marks, but intact without cracks or chips. EW
