Model 1842 style percussion rifle contracted by South Carolina to William Glaze of the Palmetto Armory in Colombia, South Carolina in the early 1850s in preparation for secession from the Union and then sent in the early 1860s back to Glaze to have 3 groove rifling installed in preparation for the Civil War. Gun has in-the-white finished three groove rifled barrel with iron front band with blade front sight and under-barrel lug for bayonet attachment. Rear added trapdoor style sight with barrel having correct "V", "P", and "Bushy" Palmetto proofs. Barrel is marked with correct "W.G. & Co." marking at rear left facet. Correct percussion lock with correct "Die" type stampings with fronds of palm tree touching the trunk of the tree on the right and correctly marked "COLUMBIA S.C. 1852" at rear. Full military walnut stock with iron furniture with "S.C." marked buttplate tang and original type ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel has traces of the original in-the-white finish with some surface pitting and discoloration. Rifling is visible with some pitting. Rear sight is a replacement from what looks to be a period U.S. 1855 rifle. Good sharp proofs with some vise marks at the rear. Lock has correct markings with fading aged patina finish. Iron furniture has some pitting with a little cold blue added in some spots. Wood has some light burnout around lock with aged dark, oil-soaked patina with small glued longitudinal crack on backplate side of the action. Good mechanics. Nice example of a Confederate secondary weapon. DLM
