Colt 1860 Army long fluted cylinder single action percussion revolver. Made 1861. Factory letter states this gun shipped to the United States Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts, June 8, 1861, in a shipment of 250 guns. Top of the barrel is marked "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA". The cylinder is marked "PATENTED SEPT 10 1850". "COLTS/PATENT" marked on the left side of the frame. There is a small "D" inspector stamp on the left side of the trigger guard. There are faint, illegible inspector cartouches on the bottom of the grip, on both sides. Matching serials on the trigger guard, frame, barrel, butt, and barrel wedge. Round, steel barrel with German silver front sight. Brass trigger guard and front grip strap. Frame, cylinder, barrel, and back grip strap have worn to a greyish patina in most areas, having been heavily cleaned at some point. Single-piece walnut grips with a light oil finish reapplied at some time. CONDITION: Metal retains little of its original finish, having been cleaned and polished. Some areas are forming a grey patina in areas. Grips have a few handling marks, scratches, and dents. Frosted bore with a few very minor pits. Strong rifling retained. Tight hammer. Cylinder does have some movement when cocked. Mechanically operable but the barrel wedge is loose. Nipples show some light pitting and wear. JWA
