Extensive collection of Major Walter Reed family photos, letters, documents, and other ephemera pertaining to the life of the famous Surgeon General. The lot consists of hundreds of papers that document Walter Reed's life and continues with ephemera from his wife and children after his death in 1902. Some highlights of the lot include several personal books and notebooks that are named to Emilie or Walter including a book regarding the French language which is signed with "Walter Reed, U.S.A. / Fort Apache, A.T. / Jan. 11, 1880". Also included are several photos and negatives of Walter and his family. Most of the paperwork in the lot dates to the early-mid 1900s and is addressed to Mrs. Water Reed. There are several holiday cards from here children, letters written to her regarding her husband's work, and biographies of Walter Reed's life written by his son, Walter Lawrence Reed. Among the letters are several which were written by famous military generals including letters from General John J. Pershing and General George Marshall. Both are signed but the signatures could be secretarially signed. There are also original school certificates from Emilie Reed, dated 1872 and her name is spelled "Emily". Also included are several stock and business certificates that are named to Walter and Emilie. Some of the documents in this lot are handwritten while others were typed on a typewriter. This archive was once owned by noteworthy collector and medical professional Dr. John K. Lattimer and there are several papers addressed to him regarding the collection contained within the lot as well as hand written notes from when Dr. Lattimer organized the archive. CONDITION: All papers range from fair-very good condition. All documents exhibit fading from age, some have slight tears, rips, or stains which are typical of old paper. Others are very clean and most writing is still legible. This is a complete family archive of a famous American physician and would be a wonderful addition to a collection or someone studying medical history. JLD
