Archival framed and matted typed letter by Theodore Roosevelt. Letter measures 8" x 10". Framed with an image of Roosevelt. Overall 22 1/2" x 18". Dated February 23rd, 1918 from the Roosevelt Hospital. Letter is addressed to U.S. Senator Ernest Lundeen of Minnesota. Lundeen, a populist, had voted against declaring war on Germany. He then voted no on the conscription bill. In December 1917 he also voted no on declaring war against Austria-Hungary. Lundeen and Roosevelt embarked on debate via correspondence about American policy. The letters addressed patriotism, free speech and dissent in a democracy. This letter addresses a speech that Lundeen made and sent to the voters in his district. Roosevelt draws the conclusion in this letter that Lundeen's actions may have been constitutional, but they made him unfit for office. Roosevelt has made handwritten corrections throughout the letter. CONDITION: Excellent. Accompanied by a description letter from The Raab Collection, Ardmore, PA. CG
