Historic Civil War muster roll of Company G, 48th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment from August 31st 1862, the day after the Second Battle of Bull Run. The 48th Pennsylvania volunteers were formed by Colonel James Nagle in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and organized at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, during the late summer of 1861. Nagle's name appears on the muster roll and he is listed as the regiment's colonel. During the Civil War, the 48th Pennsylvania covered a staggering amount of ground and accumulated an impressive combat record. The regiment fought at several famous battles from the beginning to the end of the war including Antietam, The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. This muster roll is especially historically significant because it was filled out on August 31st, 1862, which was the day after the Second Battle of Bull Run. This battle proved to be disastrous for the Union Army, as their attacks were crushed by Confederate artillery and their left flank was devastated by General Longstreet's counterattack which forced the Union Army to retreat. The muster roll is quite interesting because it details the fates of some of the men after the battle. Many of the remarks list men as "Prisoner of war at Bull Run Aug. 29, 1862", "Prisoner and wounded at Bull Run Aug 29, 1862", and "missing in action at Bull Run Aug 29, 1862". The muster roll is displayed in a heavy wood frame that is glazed on both sides so both sides of the document are visible. CONDITION: The muster roll appears to have been folded for a long time which resulted in the document tearing into sections. The muster roll was repaired with tape when it was unfolded and framed. The tape is not noticeable on the obverse but obvious on the reverse. Despite the damage, all of the writing is legible and the ink has not suffered from heavy fading. The paper exhibits slight yellowing but this does not take away from the display. The frame is sturdy and and does not suffer from any major imperfections. The document is in overall poor condition but the frame transforms it into a wonderful display. JLD
