The shoes are constructed of a hand carved wooden sole with iron plates reinforcing the heel, sole, and toe which are attached to the shoes by nails. The upper portion of the shoes are constructed with leather that are secured to the wooden soles by nails. The shoes exhibit a leather strip that attaches to a metal stud. There is an example of a similar shoe in the North Carolina Museum of History which are referred to as "slave shoes". During the Civil War, the South imported wooden soled shoes from Europe. Most were imported late in the war when southern supplies were running low and using wood for the soles of shoes would help conserve leather which had more important uses. CONDITION: Both shoes appear to be complete and are not missing any components. The leather is dry and scuffed but still remains somewhat pliable. There are several dents in the wooden soles. Overall very good.
