This 1863 Springfield percussion rifle made by Springfield Armory is marked on the tang "Charles Ammarell". The consignor has provided an article which informs who Ammarell was with his near death experience at Gettysburg with the Pennsylvania 151st and being captured at Seminary Ridge and released to re-enlist and serve with the 20th Corps in Sherman's March to the Sea. The article further connects the "XX" marking as being for the 20th Corp. The rifle is a typical Model 1863 Springfield Rifled musket with round rifled barrel, front sight set up as base for socket style bayonet and rear two leaf sight. Percussion lock marked with "Eagle" and "US Springfield" and dated 1863. Walnut full musket stock with iron hardware including tang marked in block letters "CHARLES AMMERELL" and rear of left buttstock marked "XX". Comes with correct socket style bayonet and steel rod. CONDITION: Overall right out of the attic with heavy surface pitting and dry wood appearance. Pitted bore with functioning mechanics. A true attic find. DLM
