Smith Civil War carbine made by American Machine Works of Springfield, Massachusetts between 1861 and 1865. Blued 3 groove rifled round barrel with German silver blade front sight and adjustable rear flip sight. Case hardened action with Poultney and Trimble address and American Machine Works address and Smith's patent. Action has slide bar with saddle ring. Walnut plain stock with steel buttplate and inspector's marks, which appear to be "L.F. R." and "J.H.". Walnut splinter forearm. CONDITION: Barrel blue fading to a plum color along with case colors with light freckling. Wood has oil soaked appearance with several stress cracks and usage marks and dings. Good bore with good mechanics. DLM
