The octagonal barrel is signed with partially visible "J. Sheets" in script on the top flat. "American Gunsmiths" by James Whisker shows that J. Sheets worked in Staunton County, Virginia making rifles around 1810. There is also a listing for Jacob Sheetz of Charleston, Virginia and John Jacob Sheetz of Shepherdstown, Virginia, as gunsmiths who made Kentucky rifles in the leading up to the War of 1812. The contemporary lock is a modern replacement and rifle features double set triggers. Brass furniture including a 4 piece engraved and pierced patchbox in the style of Sheets. There are 5 engraved silver inlays appearing to be contemporary. Full-length stock of Virginia form. CONDITION: Barrel retains a dark patina, about 5-1/4" have been added. Brass sideplate shows repairs. Stock also shows 5-1/4" replaced and scattered other areas around lock and other minor patches. DMG
