The tapered round barrel is stamped on the top with "82 - VA REGT" and deeply stamped "MADISON", for Madison County, Virginia, along with indistinct worn British makers mark on left side of breech. The convex rounded banana lockplate is heavily pitted and markings are no longer visible. Standard Pattern 1742 furniture. Walnut stock with swell at entry ferrule and carved beavertail around barrel tang. Stock carved with large "R" on left side and with initials ""MB" on opposite side. CONDITION: Barrel retains a heavy dark patina with scattered pitting and wear, last 15" towards muzzle have been professionally replaced. Lock is a reconversion using old parts and is well done. Lock shows heavy pitting and dark patina overall, functions well. Brass furniture shows marks from use and a mustard patina. Foremost 3 ramrod ferrules are contemporary replacements. Stock shows heavy wear and marks from use, last 21" of forestock have been professionally replaced and are well-blended. A very scarce arm that most certainly saw American use during the Revolutionary War. DMG
