Springfield 1851 Cadet percussion musket, dated 1853. Essentially, the Model 1851 was a scaled down US Model 1842 Musket produced for the U.S. military institutes such as West Point and Virignia Military Institute and also saw action in the American Civil War on both sides. 40" round barrel in .57 smoothbore with front barrel band blade front sight with no rear sight present. Lock is marked with typical US armory eagle ahead of cock with "Spring / Field / 1853" behind cock. Barrel is marked with standard "V / P / (Eagle)" proof on left side just above wood line. No barrel date found on tang near breech. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 3 barrel band configuration with sling swivels mounted on second barrel band and front of trigger guard. Butt plate is marked "US". Extremely faint "JS" cartouche in oval on left side of stock. CONDITION: Very good as heavily cleaned with scattered heavy handling marks throughout. Inside of lock appears to have been polished bright with mechanism retaining what appears to be original fire bluing. Ramrod is a replacement. Barrel bands are not original and appear to have been cold blued in an attempt to match patina on National Armory Bright firearms. Stock is very good as sanded and refinished. Large repair near barrel tang and live crack near top screw of lockplate. Action works appropriately and holds on both full and half cock. Bore is dark with heavy abrasion throughout. TON
