Composite CS Richmond Type II high-hump Type II percussion short rifle, dated 1862. 30" .58 caliber barrel with notched rear sight and pinched front sight. Lock is marked "CS" / "RICHMOND, VA" ahead of cock with "1862" (orientated vertically) behind cock. Barrel is marked "LEM" on underside and "H" on underside of tang but is otherwise unmarked. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 2 barrel band configuration with iron US marked butt plate, iron trigger guard, and brass nose cap. Stock is faintly marked "ND" just behind rear trigger guard tang. Lock cavity is not milled for Maynard tape primer. Full length ramrod with tulip shaped head that appears to be an original. CONDITION: Fair as chemically aged with heavy pitting throughout. Lock is in matching condition with manufacture marking extremely faint. Lock mechanism appears to be composed of parts made outside of the period and then chemically aged to match the rest of the gun. Lock screws are modern replacements. Stock is very good as sanded and refinished with numerous moderate handling marks and appears to be a complete replacement and is loose fitting around barrel tang. Action works appropriately and holds on both full and half cock. Bore is dark with heavy abrasion throughout and rifling completely worn away. Would make a good display or reenactment piece. -TN-
