Percussion Kentucky style rifle built in the period from recycled parts from an original "John Armstrong" rifle. Parts definitely made by Armstrong include a full octagon smoothbore barrel which still exhibits his name in script (visible even through barrel is heavily pitted), a Maryland style 4 piece patchbox with engraved floral stem lid, ringed top buttplate, and floral engraved toeplate. Barrel has German silver blade front sight and rear notched rear sight. Percussion lock marked "Warranted" held with ovoid-shaped brass backplate similar to those used in the Upper Susquehanna area. Lock is controlled by single turned trigger. Trigger guard and ramrod pipes appear to be made by the gunsmith who restocked these parts. Dark finished curly maple stock with Maryland lines. Stock has nicely done toe plate molding line. Comes with hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Metal has deep aged surface pitting on barrel with lock showing aged patina. Brass has aged patina with sideplates of patchbox probably replaced. Wood has heavy coat of old finish with some burnout around lock and some minor wood missing around rear escutcheon. Dark pitted bore with functioning mechanics. DLM
