Percussion Kentucky style rifle made by "Nathaniel Rowe" of Emmitsburg, Maryland circa 1850. Rowe took over his master John Armstrong's shop in 1842. Full octagon rifled barrel with German silver blade front sight and a unique backsight that can be used as an open or peep sight. Barrel beautifully signed "N. Rowe" in script. Barrel also dovetailed at rear and front for extra sights which come with rifle. Percussion lock with double set trigger control. Full curly maple stock with incised carved "comet" pattern behind cheek and floral line pattern in front of patchbox and cheek. Stock has brass hardware with 4-piece brass patchbox with engraved lid and floral finial. Brass buttplate with iron protective tip. Gun has 4 coin silver inlays with 2 hearts behind lock, shield thumbpiece, and Federal eagle on the cheek. Comes with hardwood ramrod. This rifle is featured in "Arms Makers of Maryland" by Daniel D. Hartzler in Figure 34 on page 46 and in "Maryland Longrifles" by Daniel D. Hartzler and James B. Whisker. CONDITION: Barrel has aged pitted appearance with some pitting near breech. Brass has aged coat of varnish with golden appearance. Stock has heavy burnout around lock with small crack in front of lock and added old coat of linseed oil. No visible restoration or repairs. Dark bore with functioning mechanics. DLM
