Springfield Model 1903 heavy barrel match rifle with Rock Island Action built in 1919. 24" straight taper "bull" barrel measuring 1" at muzzle and 1.132" at receiver with sleeved front sight mount that has a dovetailed in Lyman 17A. Barrel has "B" marking which is a "Star" Gauge barrel code. Barrel and receiver are drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Rifle is fitted for scope blocks that would accept scopes of the day such as Fecker or a Lyman Super Target Spot. Rear sight is a Lyman 48C with insert graduated from 0 to 125 with 2 notches beyond 125. Bolt is unnumbered but stamped "NS" on top flat of bolt handle for Nickel Steel. Walnut marksman's stock with serial number 340064 stamped under buttplate which is same as action. Dual sling swivels on forearm and belly of stock with two reinforcing bolts under receiver. Serrated trigger. Gun must be considered as a custom gun built by an unknown gunsmith or company of the day since known example rifles of this type have Springfield Armory manufactured actions. All parts were available from "DCM" at that time. A curious target rifle. CONDITION: Very good, retaining the majority of the finish with some bumps and dings to metal. Lyman rear sight retains much of its attractive bluing with some silvering to high edges. Scope mounts have good evidence of color case hardening that has started to fade. Floorplate and trigger guard with several bumps and bruises, more so than barrel and receiver. Walnut stock is very good with just a few minor marks. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, safeties work correctly, and bore is very good with crisp rifling. Action has been drilled on front bridge for scope mounting. DLM
